What is Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide?

Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide is a white amorphous powder that has a relative density ranging from 4.42 to 4.45. It can be dissolved in dilute acids and alkali, but only slightly soluble in ammonia and ammonium salts. However, it remains insoluble in water, ethanol, and acetone. When exposed to a temperature of 300℃, it decomposes and forms carbon dioxide and zinc oxide. Additionally, when it reacts with H2O2, it releases CO2 and forms peroxide. If heated between 250 to 500°C for varying durations and subsequently cooled to room temperature, it may exhibit fluorescence.

This compound finds various applications, such as in the production of latex film products, pigments, rayon, catalytic desulfurizers, and medicinal uses including light astringents, preservatives, disinfectants, and skin protectants.

Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide Drying Method

The traditional method of drying Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide involves using thermal energy sources like coal, oil, or natural gas. This process often leads to a significant waste of energy and the release of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, which is detrimental to both energy conservation and environmental protection.

For instance, some manufacturers use coal-fired boiler steam to indirectly dry basic zinc carbonate. This method consumes 0.7 tons of standard coal and emits 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide and 8.5 kilograms of sulfur dioxide per ton of dried product. If a factory produces 3 tons of basic zinc carbonate daily, it would emit 5.6 tons of carbon dioxide and 18 kilograms of sulfur dioxide waste gases each day. These emissions contribute to haze weather conditions and contradict current energy conservation and environmental protection policies.

To address these issues, CN201410401834.3 proposes a drying device for Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide. This device solves the problems associated with energy waste and environmental unfriendliness in the drying process. The device consists of a drying chamber and a solar water heater. A drying bed is positioned beneath the drying chamber, comprising a thermally conductive metal plate, a water pipe, and a foam insulation board. The output end of the solar water heater is connected to one end of the water pipe through a hot water delivery pipe, while the other end of the water pipe is connected to the input of the solar water heater through a return pipe.

The working principle of this device is as follows:

4. The heat generated by the heat dissipation pipe is transferred to the lower surface of the basic zinc carbonate material through the heat-conductive metal plate, effectively heating and drying both surfaces of the material.
5. The moisture generated during the drying process is expelled through the windows on the top and sides of the drying chamber, accelerating the drying speed.
6. The cooled hot water in the radiating water pipe flows back to the solar water heater through the return pipe, where it is reheated. This cycle continues, ensuring a continuous supply of heated water to dry the materials on the drying bed.
7. As the Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide products are not affected by high temperatures when exposed to sunlight, the quality of the dried product remains unchanged.

By utilizing solar energy and a more efficient drying process, this device significantly reduces energy waste and emissions, aligning with energy conservation and environmental protection goals.

Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide Preparation

A production method for Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide involves the following steps:

(1) Zinc suboxide is added to a sulfuric acid solution and the reaction is stirred to produce a zinc sulfate solution.

The chemical equation for this reaction is:

ZnO + H2SO4 = ZnSO4 + H2O

During this reaction, some by-products are generated, including:

PbO + H2SO4 = PbSO4↓ + H2O (PbSO4 precipitates as a solid)

FeO + H2SO4 = FeSO4 + H2O

CuO + H2SO4 = CuSO4 + H2O

CdO + H2SO4 = CdSO4 + H2O

MnO + H2SO4 = MnSO4 + H2O

(2) Potassium permanganate and zinc powder are added to the zinc sulfate solution to remove impurities and obtain an impurity-free zinc sulfate solution.

The addition of potassium permanganate can remove divalent iron and manganese ions in the reaction solution, resulting in the removal of FeSO4 and MnSO4. The reaction equations are:

2H2O + 3MnSO4 + 2KMnO4 = K2SO4 + 5MnO2↓ + 2H2SO4

14H2O + 6FeSO4 + 2KMnO4 = K2SO4 + 6Fe(OH)3↓ + 5H2SO4 + 2MnO2↓

MnSO4 reacts with potassium permanganate to form manganese dioxide precipitate, which removes manganese ions. FeSO4 reacts with potassium permanganate to form iron hydroxide precipitate, which removes iron ions.

(3) Sodium carbonate solution is added to the impurity-free zinc sulfate solution, and the reaction is stirred at a temperature of 50-55°C until the pH of the solution reaches 6.5-7.5. The reaction is then continued at a temperature of 45-65°C for 0.5-1 hour.

The chemical equation for the reaction between zinc sulfate and sodium carbonate is:

3ZnSO4 + 3Na2CO3 + 3H2O = ZnCO3·2Zn(OH)2·H2O + 3Na2SO4 + 2CO2↑

Once the pH of the solution reaches 6.5-7.5, the reaction is stirred for an additional 0.5-1 hour at a temperature of 45-65°C to ensure complete mixing and reaction of zinc sulfate and sodium carbonate.

(4) The reaction solution is filtered, and the filter cake is washed with purified water until the filtrate no longer contains sulfate ions. The filter cake is then dried and pulverized to obtain basic zinc carbonate. Washing the filter cake with water removes water-soluble impurities, such as sulfate radicals, as basic zinc carbonate is insoluble in water.
