What is Tin Tetrachloride Pentahydrate?

Anhydrous tin tetrachloride is a colorless and easy-flowing liquid, and the gas molecules are in a regular tetrahedral configuration. The bond length is Sn—Cl 228pm, the melting point is -33°C, and the boiling point is 114.1°C. The density is 2.226g/cm3. It is miscible with carbon tetrachloride, ethanol and benzene, easily soluble in water, and soluble in most organic solvents such as gasoline, carbon disulfide and turpentine. Slowly add water to form SnO: colloid and hexachlorostannic acid [H2[SnCl6]]. In the case of humid air, it will be hydrolyzed to generate stannic acid and hydrogen chloride, and white smoke will occur, which is corrosive. Tin tetrachloride pentahydrate is formed with the calculated amount of water. Used as mordant and chlorination catalyst in organic synthesis, and used for tin plating, etc.

Tin Tetrachloride Pentahydrate Uses

  1. Tin Tetrachloride Pentahydrate is a raw material for the synthesis of organotin compounds, a mordant for dyeing, the manufacture of cyanotype and photosensitive papers, lubricant additives, and glass surface treatment to form conductive coatings and improve abrasion resistance. Used as a cationic polymerization catalyst for isobutylene, α-methylstyrene, etc.
  2. Tin Tetrachloride Pentahydrate is the separation of potassium from rubidium and cesium. Used in organic analysis to saponify phenols and ethers. Organic synthetic dehydrating agent. Manufacture of organotin. Fabric dyeing.
  3. Tin Tetrachloride Pentahydrate is used in the manufacture of organotin compounds, as analytical reagents and dehydrating agents in organic synthesis. 

Physicochemical Properties of Tin Tetrachloride

In case of wet air, it will hydrolyze to produce tin and hydrogen chloride, which will produce white smoke and corrosivity. It forms pentahydrate with the calculated amount of water, white translucent monoclinic crystal, deliquescence in the air. Dissolve in cold water and release a large amount of heat. Dissolve in ethanol, ether, benzene, toluene and carbon tetrachloride. Decompose in case of hot water. Absorb water in wet air to form trihydrate. Further add water to produce compounds with different amounts of crystalline water such as 5, 8 and 9. Anhydrous tin chloride can absorb a large amount of chlorine at low temperature, and at the same time, its volume expands and its freezing point decreases; It can react with ammonia to form double salt; React with alkali metals to form stannate. It is strongly hydrolyzed with water, so it emits smoke in humid air; Soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, acetone, etc.
Hydrochloric acid can inhibit its hydrolysis. In the range of 19 ~ 56 ℃, hydrochloric acid can precipitate tin tetrachloride from concentrated solution as colorless hydrated crystal SnCl4 · 5H2O
