What is Sodium Metasilicate?

Sodium metasilicate, also known as silicate of soda, is an inorganic salt derived from silicic acid. It has the chemical formula Na2SiO3·nH2O and is commonly found as a white powder or crystalline particles. This salt is non-toxic, odorless, and environmentally friendly. It readily dissolves in water but is insoluble in alcohol and acid. Sodium metasilicate is alkaline in nature and has the ability to absorb moisture, which causes it to deliquesce when exposed to air. It possesses various properties such as descaling, emulsifying, dispersing, moistening, permeability, and pH buffering capabilities.

Due to its advantageous properties, sodium metasilicate is considered a priority for the development of fine chemicals and inorganic chemicals in my country. It is a key component in the production of chemical products. Sodium metasilicate is produced through the hydrothermal reaction of ordinary alkali and caustic soda, resulting in the formation of low molecular crystals. There are different forms of sodium metasilicate, including anhydrous, pentahydrate, and nonahydrate. The nonahydrate form is unique to the Chinese market and was developed in the 1980s as an emergency product with lower technical content. However, it has certain drawbacks such as a low melting point of 42°C and the release of crystal water at 30-40°C, which can cause inconvenience in its usage. It also tends to become liquid or paste during storage, leading to its gradual elimination. Nevertheless, sodium metasilicate nonahydrate still maintains a certain market due to the habits of some users and specific fields that do not prioritize crystallized water.

Among inorganic electrolytes, sodium metasilicate exhibits the highest active alkalinity and pH buffering index. It possesses strong wetting, emulsifying, and saponifying properties towards oils. It effectively removes, disperses, and suspends dirt, preventing its redeposition. The detergent has a powerful cleaning ability, large buffering capacity, and the ability to neutralize acidic dirt. It can also emulsify fats and oils, prevent the flocculation of inorganic substances, and provide corrosion protection for metals. Sodium metasilicate can be used as a substitute for sodium tripolyphosphate in the production of high-efficiency detergents and metal cleaning agents, thereby reducing environmental pollution caused by the latter. This compound has been widely used in the detergent industry for over 40 years internationally and for more than 20 years domestically, making it a mature and established chemical product with a broad market.

Sodium metasilicate finds extensive applications in various industrial sectors such as ceramics, electroplating, textiles, printing and dyeing, papermaking, cement, concrete, refractory materials, grease, and leather processing. The industries with the highest consumption of sodium metasilicate include ceramics, industrial cleaning, detergents, concrete, printing and dyeing, papermaking, cement, oil mining, and others. Its versatility and effectiveness make it a popular choice in these industries.

Sodium Metasilicate Uses

1. Sodium metasilicate is widely utilized in various washing industries. It finds applications in super concentrated washing powder, laundry detergent, laundry paste, dry cleaning agents, fiber bleach, fabric bleach, and more. It is also commonly used in metal surface cleaners, beer bottle cleaners, and solvent-based metal rust inhibitors. Additionally, it serves as a scale cleaner, electrical device cleaner, and detergent in the food industry.

2. Sodium metasilicate also plays a crucial role as a mud consistency regulator and deflocculating agent in crude oil and natural drilling controlled mining projects.

3. The construction industry utilizes sodium metasilicate as a setting accelerator for acid-resistant mortar, acid-resistant commercial concrete, and cement preparation.

4. In the paper industry, it serves as an adhesive, cost-effective ink agent, and paper surface treatment agent.

5. Sodium metasilicate is employed as printing and dyeing auxiliaries and fabric pre-treatment agents in the textile industry.

6. It has various other applications, such as being used as a filler in soap and detergent production, as an egg preservative, and in the manufacturing of vegetation molecular sieves, silicic acid, and fireproof materials.

Sodium metasilicate possesses lubricity, making it suitable for use in ceramic body slurry production. It exhibits strong alkalinity, excellent decontamination capabilities, and a large buffering capacity, allowing it to neutralize acidic dirt. It also emulsifies fats and oils, prevents the flocculation of inorganic substances, and provides corrosion resistance for metals. These properties make it a key ingredient in super-concentrated washing powders, as well as dishwashing detergents, detergents used in the food industry, metal detergents, and waste paper deinking processes.

Sodium Metasilicate Preparation

Currently, there are two commonly used methods for preparing anhydrous sodium metasilicate. The first method involves dry production by melting equal amounts of sodium carbonate and silica. The second method involves wet production by heating and pressurizing liquid sodium hydroxide to dissolve silica.

A Chinese patent document with the publication number CN 1153139A also describes a method that utilizes natural potassium feldspar as a raw material. This method involves several steps, including crushing, batching, roasting, pressurized water immersion, filtration, concentration, counter-current spray drying, compaction, and calcination. These steps are necessary to obtain powdery anhydrous sodium metasilicate. Although this method has more steps and a longer process, it is effective in producing the desired product.

Furthermore, other Chinese patent documents with publication numbers CN1188741A and CN1223232A report methods for preparing hydrous sodium metasilicate, such as sodium metasilicate pentahydrate and sodium metasilicate nonahydrate. These methods utilize sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide as raw materials.

Another method for preparing granular anhydrous sodium metasilicate involves using sodium silicate as the raw material. The modulus of the aqueous solution of sodium silicate is measured and adjusted to a range of 0.99-1.04 by adding sodium hydroxide. The solution is then heated and concentrated at a temperature below its boiling point until it reaches a weight concentration of 50%-55%. It is then sprayed through a nozzle with a diameter of 2.0-2.5 mm at a pressure of 80-90 kg/cm2. Counter-current spray drying is performed using hot air, with an inlet temperature of 340°C-350℃ and an outlet temperature of 80℃-90℃.

In summary, there are various methods available for preparing anhydrous sodium metasilicate, including dry production, wet production, and the utilization of different raw materials. Each method has its own set of steps and requirements to obtain the desired product.

Sodium Metasilicate Content Analysis

Weigh 1g of the silica sample accurately and transfer it to a beaker. Acidify the sample with 5ml of hydrochloric acid and evaporate it to dryness on a steam bath. Add another 5ml of hydrochloric acid and repeat the process once. Mix the resulting residue with 1ml of hydrochloric acid and 2ml of water, and heat it on the steam bath until it forms a soluble salt. Filter the solution using ashless filter paper and wash it with hot water. Transfer the residue to a platinum crucible and dry it at 105°C for 1 hour. Carbonize the residue at a lower temperature and then burn it at 1000°C until a constant weight is achieved. Moisten the residue with a few drops of water, add 15ml of hydrofluoric acid and 5 drops of 1:3 sulfuric acid. Drive off the acid on a hot plate and burn it at 1000°C until a constant weight is obtained.
Next, accurately weigh 500mg of a sodium oxide sample and disperse it in 150ml of water. Heat the mixture until it is completely dissolved. Add 2 to 3 drops of phenolphthalein test solution (TS-167) and 100.0ml of 0.1mol/L sulfuric acid. Use 0.1mol/L sodium hydroxide to titrate the solution until it turns pink. Subtract the volume of sodium hydroxide used from the volume of sulfuric acid, and calculate the concentration of sulfuric acid per ml.
