What is Diethanolamine Sigma?

Sodium dihydrogen phosphate is a colorless crystal or white crystalline powder that is odorless and highly soluble in water. It forms an acidic aqueous solution and is nearly insoluble in ethanol. When heated, it can lose crystal water and decompose into acidic sodium pyrophosphate (Na3H2P2O7). This compound is commonly utilized in the fermentation industry for pH adjustment. In food processing, it is often paired with disodium hydrogen phosphate as a food quality enhancer. For example, it can enhance the thermal stability of dairy products, serve as pH regulators and binding agents for fish products, and so on.

Sodium Dihydrogen Phosphate Application

Disodium hydrogen phosphate is widely used in various industries for different applications. In the food industry, it is utilized as a buffering agent, a raw material for baking powder, a sticky material and ripening agent for bread and sauce, a powder sour agent, a moisture retaining agent, and a quality improver for evaporated milk. It is also used as a stabilizer and binder for dairy products, meat, and fish products, a buffering agent for baking powder, and a mixed salt for pickling.

In the pharmaceutical industry, sodium dihydrogen phosphate is added to the surface coating of pharmaceuticals to enhance the resistance to discoloration from light and heat. It is also used in fermentation culture mediums to promote enzyme secretion in medicines and is a key component in various sodium phosphate salt medicines.

In the chemical industry, sodium dihydrogen phosphate is used as a raw material for the preparation of sodium phosphate salts and other inorganic and organic phosphates. It is also utilized as a catalyst for ester synthesis reactions, such as in the production of butyl acetate and furfuryl esters. Additionally, it is used as an acid-base regulator, buffering agent, stabilizer in compounds like peroxide, and a stabilizer for polymeric ferric sulfate.

In the printing and dyeing industry, sodium dihydrogen phosphate is used as a regulator in low-formaldehyde, no-iron finishing processes to reduce strength loss and improve whiteness retention on finished fabrics.

In metal anti-corrosion applications, sodium dihydrogen phosphate is added to Zn-Ni alloy plating solutions to improve corrosion resistance by refining coating grains and forming a protective film on aluminum surfaces to prevent corrosion. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel.

Sodium Dihydrogen Phosphate Preparation

The process of producing sodium dihydrogen phosphate from wet phosphoric acid involves several steps. Firstly, impurities in the wet phosphoric acid are removed using centrifugation or press filtration, leaving purified phosphoric acid for further use.

Next, the purified phosphoric acid is transferred to an intermediate synthesis tank where it is heated to 40°C-90°C. Carbonamide is added to the phosphoric acid in a specific molar ratio and the mixture is stirred for 40min-120min to complete the synthesis reaction.

After the reaction is done, the intermediate slurry is cooled in a crystallization tank to ≤40°C. The slurry is then centrifuged to separate the filter cake, which is the intermediate, and stored for later use.

To produce sodium dihydrogen phosphate, the intermediate is mixed with sodium hydroxide in a specific molar ratio in a synthesis tank. The mixture is stirred for 20min-100min at a controlled temperature of 40°C-90°C. After the reaction is complete, the slurry is cooled and crystallized, and the crystals are centrifuged to obtain the filter cake, which is the sodium dihydrogen phosphate product. It is then dried and packaged.

In summary, the process involves impurity removal, intermediate synthesis, crystallization, and sodium dihydrogen phosphate production to yield the final product. The carbonamide is recovered from the filtrate for reuse in the intermediate synthesis.
