Maltol Uses

  1. Maltol is a permitted edible spice specified in GB 2760-1996. Mainly used to prepare strawberry, coffee, malt, nuts, vanilla and various fruit flavors. Used for bread, cakes have freshly baked air.

Synthesis of Maltol

1. Preparation of methyl bromide
In a 1 000 L enamel reaction pot, 120 kg of water and 400 kg of 98% concentrated sulfuric acid were first added under stirring (then 270 kg of reused acid from the previous batch and 232 kg of new concentrated sulfuric acid were added in each batch). Then, the jacket steam was used to heat the inner temperature to 90 °C, and a mixture of 64 kg methanol and 344 kg 47% hydrobromic acid was added from the overhead tank at a rate of 65 kg/h under stirring, and the reaction temperature was kept at 90~95 °C. . The gas produced by the reaction passes through the reflux condenser, and the methanol, water and hydrobromic acid contained in the gas flow are taken away by reflux at 10~30 °C. The generated non-condensable methyl bromide gas is dried by the alkali washing tower, concentrated sulfuric acid drying tower, calcium chloride drying tower, and finally condensed into liquid methyl bromide at -5~10 ℃ through the condenser into the steel cylinder. The hydrobromic acid and methanol mixture was added in about 6 h, and the reaction was continued for 1 h after the addition. Each batch can collect 165~175 kg of methyl bromide, the content is more than 98%, and the yield is 85%~90%.

2. Preparation of α-methylfuran methanol
1) Preparation of Grignard reagent – methylmagnesium bromide: In a dried 1 000 L stainless steel autoclave, add a mixture of dried 160 L tetrahydrofuran and 480 L benzene, 32 kg of magnesium chips and The methylmagnesium bromide reaction solution obtained in the second. It was heated to 50 °C under stirring, and methyl bromide was introduced at a rate of 30 kg/h. After 10 min, the reaction started, and the material heated up exothermically. The reaction solution was put into a 2 000 L enamel reaction pot, and 50 kg of ammonium chloride and 200 L of water were added within 2 h at 10-12 °C for hydrolysis, and the stirring was continued for 1 h after the addition. The material was discharged, and the solid magnesium hydroxide was removed by centrifugal filtration. The filtrate is separated to remove the water layer, the oil layer is distilled to recover the solvent benzene, and the remaining residual liquid of 110-120 kg is released as α-methylfuran methanol, the analysis content is about 95%, and the yield is 85%-90%.

3. Preparation of Maltol
1) Chlorination of α-methylfuran methanol: In a 1 000 L enamel pot, add 380 L of methanol and 224 L of water, and use a jacket to freeze to -20~-30 °C under stirring, while adding 60 kg dropwise The mixed solution of the α-methylfuran methanol prepared in the previous step and 60 L of methanol was fed with chlorine gas to carry out the chlorination reaction. The reaction is exothermic, and the dripping speed and chlorine flow rate are controlled to keep the reaction temperature at -20~-30°C. The dropwise addition was completed in about 4 h, and the chlorine flow was continued for 30 min, and the reaction was terminated when the total chlorine flow reached 75 kg.

2) Hydrolysis of chlorinated products to prepare maltol: The chlorinated liquid is pumped into a 1 000 L distillation pot with a water pump, firstly vacuumed for 1 h to remove residual chlorine, and then methanol is recovered by atmospheric distillation until the internal temperature reaches 100 °C, then changed to reflux for hydrolysis reaction for 3 h, and cooled to room temperature. Put the hydrolyzed solution into a 500 L neutralizing pot, slowly add 20% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution under stirring, neutralize the hydrolyzed solution to pH 2~3, then freeze to -5 °C, and precipitate about 60 kg of crude maltol crystals. After the crude product is subjected to ethanol crystallization, decolorization, water crystallization and other technological processes, the crude maltol is obtained.

Purification of Maltol

A method for decolorization and recrystallization of methyl maltol, comprising the following steps:

(1). First, put 500L of alcohol into the roughing kettle and stir, then put 800kg of the frozen crude product of the chlorinated hydrolysis material into the roughing kettle and heat it to 60℃~70℃ to dissolve it completely.

(2) After the crude product is dissolved, it is pumped into the first decolorization kettle, and 50kg of activated carbon is thrown in. The temperature is controlled at 60°C to 70°C and stirred for 1 hour. The filtered activated carbon is collected and sent to a designated solid waste treatment plant for treatment.

(3). Put 20kg of activated carbon into the second decolorization kettle, and the temperature is controlled at 60℃~70℃ for secondary decolorization (the solution after filtration is colorless and transparent liquid), put it into the filter after half an hour and send it to the freezing kettle for freezing with a circulating pump , the filtered activated carbon is collected and sent to the designated solid waste treatment plant for treatment.

(4). When the temperature of the kettle is frozen below 5°C, put it into a centrifuge and spin to dry to obtain the desired product methyl maltol wet product (white crystal), and then send it to the drying room to dry and package the finished product. The centrifuged liquid is collected and distilled to recover alcohol. The yield is above 95%.
