What is Gardenia Yellow?

Gardenia Yellow Application Areas

1. In the food industry, Gardenia Yellow is commonly used to color flour products. Gardenia Yellow Content Determination

1. UV spectrophotometry
my country promulgated and implemented national standards for the determination of the food additive Gardenia Yellow and Gardenia Yellow in food in 1987 and 1998 respectively. In the 1987 standard, the color value and OD value are used as indicators for gardenia yellow quality evaluation and control. The color value is calculated by measuring the absorbance of a certain concentration of gardenia yellow aqueous solution at 440nm, through the formula A1=A*10/G The calculated A1 is the color price. It is easy to see that the higher the color price, the better. The lower the latter two indicators are, the purer the gardenia yellow pigment is. Among them, A1 is the absorbance of the powder sample, A is the absorbance of the test solution, G is the weight of the powder sample (g): OD value = A238/A440, and the OD value less than 04 is qualified. Since UV cannot be accurately quantified, this method cannot effectively become the quantitative standard for gardenia yellow, that is, crocin.
2. HPLC method
In 1982, pfander et al. first used HPLC to measure crocin. Since then, there have been several reports abroad that have improved and perfected the HPLC method. Wang Chunfang et al. used high-performance liquid chromatography to determine the content of crocin, the main pigment component in Gardenia jasminoides and Gardenia jasminoides, and compared the purity of the chromatographic peaks and the consistency of the spectra of the chromatographic peaks. In the 1998 standard, the HPLC method was used to quantify Gardenia Yellow using gardenia yellow as a reference substance. However, there is still a lack of effective quantitative standards for crocin, the main component of gardenia yellow pigment.

Gardenia Yellow Extraction and Isolation

A method for extracting gardenia yellow pigment from gardenia is described. The method includes the following steps:

a. Select mature gardenia fruits and boil them in hot water at a temperature of 75V for no more than 10 seconds. Soak the boiled fruits in an infiltration solution for 1.5 hours. The infiltration solution consists of 100 parts of purified water mixed with 1.5 parts of table salt and 0.3 parts of vitamin C. After soaking, remove the fruits and dry them.

b. Crush the dried gardenia fruits and place them in a container.

c. Pre-cool the container in a cold box with a preset temperature of 0-rC for 35 minutes. Then thaw the container naturally and dry the fruits again.

d. Add 1/3 of the total amount of calcium carbonate to the dried material from step c. Mix well and put it into the leaching equipment. Use a 20% ethanol solution for leaching and control the leaching time to 4 hours. Maintain the temperature at 70-80°C during extraction.

e. After the leaching in step d is completed, filter the leaching liquid.

f. Pass the filtrate through a porous adsorption resin. Elute the resin with a 30% ethanol solution, followed by a 50% ethanol solution. Collect the eluent for later use.

g. Concentrate the clear liquid obtained in step f in a vacuum concentration tank until the relative density is 1±0.01. Then use spray drying technology to dry the concentrated liquid and obtain gardeniaflavin.
