Disodium Edetate Dihydrate, commonly referred to as disodium EDTA, is a potent chelating agent known for its strong ability to bind with metal ions. With its exceptional stability constant and wide range of coordination properties, disodium EDTA can effectively interact with nearly all metal ions, excluding alkali metals like calcium, magnesium, and other multivalent ions. This interaction results in the formation of stable complexes that are soluble in water, effectively removing metal ions and preventing any harmful reactions caused by them.

Disodium Edetate Dihydrate Uses

Disodium Edetate Dihydrate finds applications in various industries such as detergents, dyeing auxiliaries, fiber treatment agents, cosmetic additives, food additives, agricultural micro-fertilizers, and marine aquaculture. It is primarily used as a complexing agent to bind metal ions and facilitate metal separation. Additionally, it is employed in detergents, liquid soaps, shampoos, agricultural chemical sprays, color photosensitive materials processing bleaching fixatives, and water purification agents. Disodium Edetate Dihydrate also serves as a pH regulator, coagulant, and redox initiator in the polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber. It has a low toxicity level, with an oral LD50 of 2000 mg/kg in rats.

Furthermore, Disodium Edetate Dihydrate is utilized as a curing agent for epoxy resin and a chain extender for polyurethane monomers in applications such as adhesives, filament winding, laminates, high-performance coatings, and tank lining coatings. It is also employed as a quantitative analysis agent for heavy metals, specifically for complexing iron ions and controlling polymerization reaction rates.

Disodium Edetate Dihydrate Content Analysis

Accurately measure approximately 5g of the sample and transfer it into a 250ml volumetric flask. Add water to dissolve the sample, and then dilute it to the mark, ensuring thorough mixing. This prepared liquid will be used as the sample.

Next, precisely weigh about 200mg of reagent-grade calcium carbonate, which is known to have a high level of purity. Place the calcium carbonate in a 400ml beaker and add 10ml of water. Shake the beaker to create a slurry. Cover the beaker with a watch glass and insert a pipette into the beaker, ensuring it is positioned along the mouth. Add 2ml of dilute hydrochloric acid test solution (TS-117) to the beaker and shake it to dissolve the calcium carbonate. Rinse the outer surface of the pipette, watch glass, and beaker side wall with water, directing the flow downward. Then, dilute the solution to approximately 100ml.

Under stirring, preferably using a magnetic stirrer, slowly add about 30ml of the prepared sample solution through a 50ml burette. Add 15ml of sodium hydroxide test solution (TS-224) and 300mg of hydroxynaphthol blue indicator. Continue titrating the solution with the sample solution until the blue endpoint is reached.

To calculate the content of Disodium Edetate Dihydrate, use the following formula:
Disodium Edetate Dihydrate content (%) = 92980 × W1 / V × W2

In the formula:
W1 represents the mass of pure calcium carbonate in grams,
V represents the volume of sample solution used in milliliters, and
W2 represents the mass of the sample in grams.

Disodium Edetate Dihydrate Production Method

The sodium cyanide method involves a step-by-step process to obtain the finished product. Firstly, the mixture of sodium cyanide and formaldehyde is slowly added to the ethylenediamine aqueous solution in a specific ratio. Air is introduced under reduced pressure at a temperature of 85°C to remove ammonia gas. Once the reaction is complete, the pH value is adjusted to 4.5 using concentrated sulfuric acid. The mixture is then decolorized, filtered, concentrated, crystallized, and dried to obtain the final product.

In the chloroacetic acid method, the process begins by mixing 100kg of chloroacetic acid, 100kg of ice, and 135kg of 30% NaOH solution. Under stirring, 18kg of 83% to 84% ethylenediamine is added and the mixture is kept at 15°C for 1 hour. Gradually, batches of 30% NaOH solution are added until the reaction becomes alkaline. The mixture is then left at room temperature for 12 hours. It is then heated to 90°C and activated carbon is added for decolorization. The resulting filtrate is adjusted to pH 4.5 using hydrochloric acid and filtered again at 90°C. The filtrate is cooled, crystallized, separated, washed, and dried at 70°C to obtain Disodium Edetate Dihydrate.
