What is Commelinae Herba?

Purple Commelina: It is the whole plant of Commelinaceae Tradescantia virginiana L.. The roots are thin cylindrical, shrunken, gray, mostly fibrous roots, linear, occasionally broad linear, tough and not easy to break. The stem is cylindrical, 2-5mm in diameter, dark yellow to brown on the surface, covered with numerous white pilose; the texture is tough and not easy to break, with longitudinal wrinkles; residual fibrous roots are mostly seen between the stem nodes. Leaves shrunk and curled, dark green and glabrous above, dark purple below, covered with white pubescence, flattened and intact, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, entire, 6-13cm long, 6-8mm wide, Apex acuminate, base sheath-like clasping stem, leaf sheath covered with white pilose. Tough and not easy to break. Slight gas, sweet in the mouth.

Effects of Commelinae Herba

1. The antibacterial effect is tested by plate hole method or test tube dilution method. Staphylococcus aureus is extremely sensitive to Commelina decoction, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella sonnii, and Bacillus typhi are mildly sensitive; Shigella dysenteriae, Balian Coccus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and other bacteria also have inhibitory effect. However, it has no inhibitory effect on Streptococcus A, Bacillus paratyphi, Shigella flexneri and Bacillus anthracis.
2. Antiviral effect The water decoction of Commelina chinensis has obvious protective effect on the death of mouse pneumonia caused by influenza virus PR strain. In dilute concentration, it has a certain inhibitory effect on the hemagglutinin of Shanghai Fang 27-29 influenza virus. The water decoction of this product has inhibitory effect on rhinovirus N9 strain.
3. Antipyretic effect Commelinae Herba has obvious antipyretic effect. Pharmacological experiments have proved that Commelina can inhibit the fever caused by injecting expired vaccines to rabbits. Clinical observations also prove that this product has a moderate and lasting cooling effect.
4. Hepatoprotective effect Commelinae Herba can significantly reduce the activity of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in mouse serum caused by carbon tetrachloride and ethanol in vivo, indicating that Commelinae Herba water extract has the effect of carbon tetrachloride and ethanol on mice. The resulting liver injury has a protective effect.
5. Effect on blood sugar Commelinae Herba has the effect of inhibiting α-glucosidase and lowering blood sugar. One pyrrolidine alkaloid and four aziridine alkaloids can be isolated from the methanol extract. When starch, maltose and sucrose are used as substrates, these components have no effect on the crude pig small intestine α-glucoside. Enzymes have different degrees of inhibition, but the inhibition of commercially available enzymes is weak.
6. Anti-inflammatory effect Commelinae Herba has anti-inflammatory effects on mouse ear swelling model induced by xylene, mouse peritoneal capillary permeability model induced by glacial acetic acid, and carrageenan-induced paw swelling in rats.
7. Effects on blood lipid metabolism Commelinae Herba can reduce serum TC and LDL-C levels in hyperlipidemic mice, significantly increase HDL-C levels, and reduce serum, liver and brain tissue MDA levels in hyperlipidemic mice.
8. Antioxidant effect Commelina japonica ethyl acetate extract has a strong ability to scavenge DPPH free radicals. Commelina flavonoids have the ability to scavenge superoxide anion free radicals, DPPH free radicals and hydroxyl free radicals.
9. Effect on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury Commelinae Herba has a protective effect on the mouse model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.
