What is Boraxo?

Borax is a transparent crystal that undergoes weathering when exposed to air. When heated to temperatures between 400-500°C, it can be dehydrated into anhydrous sodium tetraborate. At 878°C, it transforms into a glassy substance. The acidic oxide B2O3 present in the molten borax allows it to dissolve metal oxides. This property is particularly useful in removing oxides from metal surfaces during welding processes. When metal oxides are dissolved in molten borax, they often exhibit distinct colors. For instance, cobalt metaborate (Co(BO2)2) turns blue, nickel metaborate (Ni(BO2)2) turns brown, and chromium metaborate (Cr(BO2)3) turns emerald green. This phenomenon, known as the borax bead reaction, is frequently employed in analytical chemistry to identify specific metal ions.

Boraxo Uses

Boraxo finds its primary applications in the glass and enamel industries. In the glass industry, it is utilized to enhance the transparency and heat resistance of glass, as well as improve the transmission of ultraviolet rays. In enamel products, it serves to prevent enamel from easily chipping off and adds a glossy finish. Additionally, boraxo is extensively employed in various other sectors such as optical glass, glass fiber, non-ferrous metal welding, jewelry adhesives, printing and dyeing, silk and woolen fabric washing, gold refining, cosmetics, pesticides, fertilizers, borax soap, preservatives, antifreeze, disinfectants, and medicinal purposes. It serves as a fundamental raw material for producing other boron compounds, making it indispensable in metallurgy, machinery, light industry, textiles, electronics, chemical industry, and military sectors.

Furthermore, boraxo serves as a chromatography reagent, buffer, preservative, and metal flux. It can be used as a filler in laundry detergent and soap, as well as a raw material in the manufacturing of optical glass, enamel, porcelain glaze, artificial gemstones, and soldering flux. When refined, it can be utilized as a cooling and detoxifying medicine, effectively treating various ailments such as sore throat, tooth decay, aphthous ulcers, and eye obstruction. Its cool nature, sweet and salty taste, make it a valuable remedy.

Boraxo Production Methods

In the carbon-alkali method, boron ore powder that has been pretreated and a solution of sodium carbonate are combined and reacted in a carbonizer. The amount of sodium carbonate added is slightly higher than the calculated amount, ranging from 105% to 110%. The carbonizer is heated and enclosed in a jacket to maintain the desired temperature. The reaction pressure is controlled between 0.5 and 0.6 MPa, and the temperature is maintained at 130 to 135℃. The reaction time lasts for 13 to 15 hours, and the carbon dioxide concentration is maintained at 25% to 30%. The resulting purified kiln gas can be used directly. After the carbonization process, the slurry is filtered to remove any remaining residue and then subjected to countercurrent washing. The clear solution obtained from this process is then concentrated, unless it already meets the required concentration level. The concentrated solution is then cooled, crystallized, centrifuged, and dried to obtain the final product of borax.

In the pressurized alkaline hydrolysis method, pretreated boron ore powder is mixed with a solution of sodium hydroxide. The amount of sodium hydroxide used is between 160% and 200% of the calculated amount. The mixture is then heated and pressurized in an alkaline hydrolysis vessel equipped with a stirrer to facilitate decomposition. The reaction pressure is maintained at 0.4 MPa, and the reaction time lasts for 6 to 8 hours. After the alkaline hydrolysis process, the resulting slurry is filtered and subjected to countercurrent washing using a blade vacuum filter. The filtered liquid is then carbonized using carbon dioxide. The carbonized liquid is subsequently cooled, crystallized, separated, and dried to obtain the final product of borax.

To summarize, the carbon-alkali method involves mixing pretreated boron ore powder with sodium carbonate solution, while the pressurized alkaline hydrolysis method involves mixing pretreated boron ore powder with sodium hydroxide solution. Both methods undergo specific reaction conditions and subsequent processes to obtain the desired borax product.
